For his work in RRS, the Society of Critical Care Medicine selected him for society’s highest honor, the Asmund Laerdal Award for contribution to resuscitation research.

A founding member of the International Society for Rapid Response Systems, Dr. DeVita was elected its inaugural President. Dr. DeVita was also a founding member of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

ABOUT THIS COURSE

Sudden death can occur in hospitals. When it is preventable, it is a catastrophe beyond imagination. Not only are patients hurt, but also their families and loved ones. Even the caregivers who were involved can carry deep scars. What makes the tragedy even deeper is that amazingly, up to 85% of such deaths may be predictable, and many of those preventable. Still, to systematically prevent in-hospital cardiac arrest might seem a "no-brainer", but in fact was not only not obvious at all, but has had — and still has — significant obstacles to overcome. Rapid Response Systems have been developed to find, and treat effectively patients who are deteriorating and are at risk of death while receiving care in hospitals. The system is now common in hospitals around the world. In this presentation, Dr. Michael DeVita, one of the earliest pioneers of RRS, will describe the insights that led him and others to develop the systems and then band together to promote them internationally.

Objectives:

● Better understand the history of the Rapid Response Team
● Better understand the impact of preventable sudden deaths on families and caregivers
● Identify those patients that are at high risk for medical harm and injury (or death)
● Be able to demonstrate the basic process of activating a Rapid Response code in a hospital
